One of the many benefits of being part of a community is that we get to share heartwarming stories from our partner practices. These stories remind us why our mission is to improve the lives of animals and the people who care for them. Here, from Rarebreed partner practice Plattsburgh Animal Hospital in Plattsburgh, New York, is an amazing tale of how the Plattsburgh team, with incredible help and support from their community, went above and beyond to reunite a little lost dog with her owners. Once upon a time, on an October day in Plattsburgh, New York, a small, curly, white pup appeared on our doorstep in the arms of a good Samaritan. We could tell she wasn’t feeling well and would need medical attention.
After a head-to-tail exam, our care team discovered that this little dog was indeed terribly sick, diabetic, and would require intensive care to stabilize her condition. With the help of our Angel Fund, our medical team sprang into action with the lifesaving treatment that she needed.
During her exam, which involved in-depth diagnostics, we found that she was microchipped. The sleuthing began and, after lots of digging, we were able to successfully confirm proof of ownership and learn that her name was Missy. It turns out that Missy’s journey began in Menard, Texas, roughly 1,900 miles from Plattsburgh, New York.
We contacted her owners and learned that Missy had been living in a loving home with parents who were managing her diabetes until one day, while in the care of a pet sitter, she got loose and couldn’t find her way back home. Her owners feared that without proper care, Missy’s condition could become critical. They were heartbroken and hoped for her safe return.
Finally, after weeks of medical stabilization, lots of belly rubs, a pup-tastic birthday celebration (diabetic-friendly cake included), and a Halloween costume party with our Plattsburgh team, Missy has made her journey back to Texas, thanks to a close friend of our hospital team from the Joshua Fund Dog Rescue.
While her adventure with us started out a little rocky, we can assure you that her journey was filled with love, hope, the very best medical care from our team, and a joyous cross-country family reunion. We are thankful that Missy’s story had a happy ending, due in large part to technology, diligent pet parents who microchipped her, and a little help from all her lucky stars.
We want to give a big shout-out to our local animal rescue, The Joshua Fund Dog Rescue, for all their help, and to the local community who helped make her stay in New York as comfortable as possible.
