Work That Cares for Both Hearts and Minds

Rarebreed on Mental Health Awareness

Just a few years ago, mental health wasn’t a topic people talked about as openly as we do now. It stayed quiet – something you dealt with on your own, for fear of being seen differently. Today, the conversation has shifted. The stigma around mental health is evolving with more people choosing openness over silence. At Rarebreed, we’re here for that.

We believe that care isn’t limited to the pets we care for. We recognize that our team — the people who show up every day with competence and compassion for your pets — deserve support for their whole well-being. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to uplift one another, normalize conversations about mental wellness and connect with resources that strengthen resilience.

Here are a few of the ways we support the Rarebreed family throughout the year in regard to mental health:

  • Comprehensive support through our Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • A company-sponsored subscription to Calm Health for daily wellness
  • Dedicated behavioral health coverage integrated within our medical plan

Those outside of the veterinary care industry don’t always see the toll this work takes on practitioners. The long hours, the emotional investment in every patient, and the weight that follows you home at the end of a stressful day. To all the animal caregivers out there: we see you, and we care.

In veterinary medicine and animal care, where that emotional commitment runs deep, supporting mental health isn’t a perk — it’s essential.

We encourage every Rarebreed team member to check in on themselves and their colleagues. Make use of available resources, and give yourself the same grace you extend to others. Rarebreed leadership is committed to fostering environments where people can bring their full selves to work and where asking for help is seen as a strength, not a stigma.

“The Rarebreed team – especially during a difficult time – reminded our team that we are supported and gave us some professional resources so we didn’t feel so alone during that season. It has made us all more aware to check on each other.” – Amy Englefield, Regional Relationship Manager at Rarebreed Veterinary Partners.

This month, and every month, we are committed to making sure our veterinary teams feel supported, seen and understood. That means creating space for honest conversations, prioritizing well-being in and out of the clinic, and continuing to build a culture where people feel valued, not just for the work they do, but for who they are.

We want our broader community — clients, future team members and our partners — to know this:

Our Vision is to elevate the human experience by advancing the wellbeing of pets, their people, and the professionals who care for them. Part of that includes supporting mental health. It is not optional; it’s how we take care of our people, and it’s what makes us stronger together. Because when you care for the mind as thoughtfully as you care for the body — both human and animal — everyone benefits.
